The Magnifying Glass

by Stefani on 20-April-2009

Good Monday morning everyone!

I am so excited to share something new with you today. Well, it’s not really NEW new, it’s been quietly flying under the radar for a while now, but today it’s time to for the big debut.

I kinda feel like there should be cake and a tiara or something!

Last year I participated in a collaborative photo project with my dear friend and fellow mama of three boys, Eren. We called it Six One Way.The idea was that each of us would post a triptych every week for a year. The only rule was that the photos should be something that gave a little glimpse into the strange and wonderful world of boys.

Left Behind

Six One Way became something really special to me – a kind of quiet meditation, a way to share life with a mama who lives too far away, a little laugh, a bit of encouragement, the warm knowledge that we mamas are in this together. It was a beautiful way to document a year.

When week 52 came, I didn’t really want to be done just yet. Neither Eren nor I could bring ourselves to post a final photo set. We just felt like leaving that door open and seeing what might come through it.

Red Eared Slider

Eventually, we got to talking about just how many of the year’s photos showed our boys our exploring the outdoors, and then it hit us… the natural evolution, the next step…

We decided that we’d really like to continue sharing our adventures with each other and with you too. So, over the last few months, we have been doing a little nature show-and-tell for each other over at a blog we call The Magnifying Glass.

Blackberry Vine

It’s a little bit nature journal, a little bit “how-to” and pretty much covered in dirt and bugs, green vine-y things, fresh air and sunshine. It’s a real good excuse to close the books and go play outside. And it also means I get to keep on collaborating with one of the coolest mamas EVAH!

Harlequin Bugs

We hope you’ll pop over for a visit, and that it will inspire you to get out and dig into this gloriously intricate and endlessly fascinating world with us.

And while there isn’t cake or a tiara, there IS a really neat giveaway to celebrate our debut. Head on over and take a peak!

I was sad when it ended too, but I’m glad you will continue. I love your button too!

Oh, this is so up my alley… or should I say “down my country road”! I’m heading over this minute!

Steph, I love The Magnifying Glass! Can’t wait to poke around some more!!! Just wanted to share that we have a little family of Western Screech Owl living in our backyard in a dead tree. Papa owl sits on a branch right above our back door and blinks at us and the dog when we go out, and Mama sits cozy on her nest. We have really been enjoying learning more about them and observing them. Thanks for the encouragement and I will be reading for more inspiring ideas to GET OUTSIDE!

Oh, so much fun! Have you guys used the book Field Guide to Nature and Survival Guide for Children by Tom Brown? Such a great book. I studied with him years ago and it’s just such great stuff. I’ll be checking in for sure.

Sometimes I wonder where you find the time, but then again, I know that the time is there if we make it… I love the new space and what the two of you are doing there…just added the magnifying glass to my list of blogs to follow, and cannot wait for the journey.

(Also, your link to doodle bugs seems to be broken…or was a couple of days ago when I tried clicking…)

Cassandra April 21, 2009 at 8:27 am

Nevermind. The link works for me now 😉 Must have been operator’s error!

I just took a look and all I can say is…
You are too cool!
I’m off to try to make my first pair of bandana pants for the boy while the girl naps!

What a sweet comment Tracey! But no, I’m not tireless… I’m really REALLY stinking tired! 🙂
2 is a fun age, and it turns into 3 all too fast. Smooch him up!

Stefani April 21, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Someone else mentioned having a problem, do it wasn’t just you. Not sure what that’s about.
I haven’t had a second to doodle lately, but I’ve got a few little things just itching to make their way out of my pencil 🙂

Stefani April 21, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Um yes, well, I don’t have to get myself up and dressed and kids fed and be out the door at a certain time and all that goes along with that either.
I don’t know how YOU manage to do all that you do! You are a wonder!
And thanks, friend, for your sweet comments about the new space!
