Rainy Day

Rainy Day

Yesterday, when we went to the grocery store, the little temperature gauge on my rearview mirror read 85 degrees.

Then sings my soul!

For a little while at least, our baked bodies have been taken out of the oven and set on the counter to cool a bit. Oh heavenly day!

And, quite literally, when it rains it pours. Our perfect bliss was made more so, when the clouds gathered up and showered down blessed rain upon us.

We danced.

We twirled.

We had hot cocoa. I didn't think this was altogether necessary, but my littles wanted to complete the coziness 🙂

And really, when they are all wet and wrapped in towels, grinning ear to ear with the utter joy of boys that have played in "real rain!", there's not a lot that I'd say no to.

How lovely that you can appreciate the rain! Over here in England we’ve had rather more than our fair share of it this summer, if fact it has hardly felt like summer at all! (But at least I can justify drinking hot chocolate every day!)

We would dance in the rain if we got some! Glad you had a great day.

erin August 20, 2008 at 6:03 am

there is nothing better than playing in a summer storm! how fun!

It’s strange to hear you rejoicing about cool temperatures in the eighties. Here in The Northeast, the eighties are a hot summer’s day. I won’t even swim unless it hits eighty-five!

Enjoy it!

I love playing in the rain! We have had rain here for the past week, and it’s been wonderful!

Linn August 20, 2008 at 7:11 am

A summer rain shower…what joy! Enjoy the excitement.

Angela August 20, 2008 at 7:15 am

We are right there with you. This has been SUCH a week of welcome rain in CS. We have green grass for the first time since May! (And I’ll admit, I had a big cup of Chai last night to complete the coziness, myself)

oh how I love the rain too!! Love this post and picture! It has been a nice 5o at night and in the 7o’s in the day here, oh happy day!

We were a chilly 46 this morning – and hope to get into the 70’s, so it is feeling fall like here already in NY.

I love summer rain – we used to have a stone sidewalk my dad made and it would really catch the puddles and they would be warm – loved splashing in them and getting all wet head to toe, then coming in for graham crackers with peanut butter.

I found your blog from your guest post about Summer is… I read your About Me and felt like I was listening to a conversation; what a easy style of writing you have. You really make home-schooling sound joyful but realistic too. My little ones are still too young for me to fret over that kind of schooling, but I do hope I am able to teach them to read myself. I’ll definitely stop over again.

Ahhh, sweet rain in the summer.
Yesterday I watched ‘Skylark’ the sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall. Waiting for that rain to fall…
Funny to read your post right after I watched that movie.

Raining here in our part of the northwest today too. I’d titled my post just the same today before coming for a visit here. I do love a rainy day and getting cozy. Looks like the rain brought such fun for you.

Laura August 20, 2008 at 10:36 am

I totally agree – we were just talking yesterday about how this drizzle makes it feel like fall and how we should get out the hot chocolate. Maybe tonight we will!

Laura in Dallas, where we must have fairly similar weather.

I’m in Texas too and we didn’t get any rain, NOT FAIR!! JK, LOL! I’m glad you guys got to cool down a bit and enjoy some rainy day eating.

This was an absolute splendid post!

Teresa August 20, 2008 at 11:50 am

We had a rainy day yesterday as well. In fact, it was a stormy day. We stayed inside ALL day, and by 6 pm my kids were itching to get out the door! I let them run outside for a bit, and it was like heaven for them. They loved it!

misschris August 20, 2008 at 12:09 pm

We are having a bit of cooler weather here today and it’s wonderful. Fidge prefers when it’s raining so she can dance around in her cheery cherry rainboots and splash about in the puddles. It is something to celebrate!

Steph August 20, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Hehe you know you’re in Texas if 85 is considered cocoa worthy weather! Here in New Zealand 85 would be considered an extreme heat wave!

Kathi D August 20, 2008 at 12:57 pm

I grew up in Phoenix, and when the rain came, we ran outside to soak it up! Heavenly, isn’t it?

Heather August 20, 2008 at 1:27 pm

What a perfect picture! I wish we would get rain where we are… we NEED it!

Wendy August 20, 2008 at 1:33 pm

I love your blog- so glad I found it! I love your photos and the whimsica feel of it all 🙂

Ginger August 20, 2008 at 2:00 pm

We’ve been enjoying the rain also but with a 2 1/2 month old we do more of the sitting by the window enjoying the sound and the smell than the dancing in it. I miss MN rain but this is a nice relief from the heat.

emily ruth August 20, 2008 at 3:17 pm

oh how i love this!

Baba August 20, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Ahhh the joy of playing in the rain. Even we adults love this at times. The simple things.

jessica August 20, 2008 at 6:06 pm

As much as I love sunny days, I really enjoy rainy days…even though we’ve had our fair share this summer. Its a great excuse to stay in side and drink tea and craft!

Katie August 20, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Beautiful photo. I wish we had rain here – it’s a bit chilly, but if it were raining it would make the cold worthwhile.

Leslie August 20, 2008 at 8:25 pm

if only we would get some rain, its been at least a month! What beautiful memories you are creating that will be passed down to your children’s children.

Alissa August 20, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Oh! You’ve got to look for this children’s book:James and the Rain http://www.amazon.com/James-Rain-Karla-Kuskin/dp/0671888080 When the librarian found out my oldest is named James she recommended it today, and we checked it out and we love it.

Hannah August 20, 2008 at 8:38 pm

It *was* wonderful, wasn’t it? And so long-awaited!

Mary Smith August 20, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Thanks for your enthusiasm about the rain! I was feeling quite blue about it here in Vancouver. Your photo is wow.

Jane August 20, 2008 at 11:28 pm

“Then sings my soul!”
You crack me up. I am one of your new readers and grew up in Texas, been up here in the Yankee parts go’in on 5 years, so your blog brings me home…
You and your boys are so full of life. Just awesome!

laurie: That'sthewayitis August 24, 2008 at 5:06 am

Rain is a beautiful thing, and kids get that in a different way than even we rain lovers do. My 9-year-old lives to jump in puddles and mud. I think she’d eat it if I didn’t stop her.
