Today was a really busy day. Run here, run there, check off the list, etc. The eldest did his reading practice following me around the house, while I folded clothes, put dinner in the crock pot, and unloaded the dishwasher. Afterwards, we took a field trip to the Texas State Capitol.
All day long, I told myself that after the kids went to bed, I would curl up on the couch with my crochet hook and a good movie.
I have no idea what good movie, because I didn’t make it that far.
Someone spilled milk at dinner, so really, considering all the other junk on the floor, it needed to finally be mopped.
The we realized that soccer practice is tomorrow, and the socks/shin guards had not been washed. So, we went ahead and gathered up all the rest of the laundry too.
And oh yeah, tomorrow’s trash day, so we needed to get all the trash together while we were at it.
Then the dog began barking her fool head off, to remind me that I’d forgotten dog food at the grocery store this morning. So I went back. Again.
Daddy did tub while I was gone, but somone needed a story when I returned, and someone else needed to talk about things. Important things.
That leaves a little so-and-so who needed graham crackers and milk, and a story, and three trips to the bathroom, and a rousing rendition of “I’m a Little Teapot,” and to kiss Daddy again, and then one more story, and then 57.3 flips and flops before he settled down.
There will be no granny squares or pay per view tonight.
However, in my sleep deprived state, I’ve concocted a plan based on “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” which the boys and I listened to yesterday. If you have not yet heard about Kiddie Records, you have to scoot over there, right now. They have a bazillion vintage kid story records available for free downloading. (Thanks, Write Mama Write for the tip.) Go check it out. Go now, I’ll wait.
Cool, right?
So, back to my plan… I’m going to leave my unpaid bills on the counter and my unfolded clothes on the couch. When I wake up, I’m sure the elves will have taken care of things.
A girl can dream.
And now, speaking of dreaming, it’s time for some serious work at the woodpile

If the elves do a good job for you, can they come here next? I could really use them too. Sounds like one of those “mama” days when nothing can go right without the mama. Hang in there – today is bound to be better!
oh i love our capital! so beautiful!
oh, for elves!
actually, what we really need is an ‘Alice’. Like on Brady Bunch. Boy would that help.
i have a super old version of this story, i remember my grandma reading it to me. she always liked the books about housework and cows stuck in silos and the sort. good memories for me, thanks for the tip, i will go take a listen asap.
oh and i thought my kids were the only ones who took hours to get to bed sometimes (all the requests, drinks and hugs and tuck ins and this and that and…. i’m exhausted too!)
Oh girl! Can I ever relate! Cool about the records… now to find the time to do some downloads…
Thank you for the link to the vintage kiddie songs. And I agree with Kirsten’s idea of an Alice in the house, but maybe a miniature one (an Alice elf). She always seemed to be standing in front of the refrigerator waiting for Sam, getting in the way.
I had plans for a movie last night, too. Didn’t happen. There’s always tonight – or tomorrow night!
I watched a movie last night and put off the laundry and a couple other chores that were calling my name. I turned off my hearing aid and called out, “I can’t hear youuu!” The girls love the Elves and the Shoemaker book we have. Come to think of it, it’s been a while since we read it and that will be the bedtime story tonight!!
please send the bill paying elves my way. i have the money, they just need to write the checks.
I personally am waiting for the gnomes to do my dirty work. I just love those adorable red hats. Aidan insists on going to bed at 11PM no matter what time we start getting ready for bed, and I am so longing for a mommy movie. Maybe the gnomes will bring one.
I’m waiting for the cleaning fairies. I think they forgot my address! I plan to have a really clean house one day – maybe when the kids leave home?? Oh, maybe a moment to myself too….
i just watched eliza “fold” all of my folded laundry…oh, can i run away and let the elves come?
Thanks for the kiddie records link, I just found madeline
Yeah, for me, not a kid.
