Getting Carried Away

Three days.

Just three days.

In only three eensy weensy little days, I will be on a plane to Japan.

JAPAN!

You would think that I would have begun to ready myself, packing, preparing my family to be without me (you know, making lots of lists for Daddy, finishing up laundry, paying bills, stocking the freezer..) but no, I haven’t done a thing.

It’s like I just can’t wrap my mind around it. It’s too much.

Too much to think about leaving my family for 7 days.

Too much to think that I will be waking up when they are eating dinner.

Too much to think about 13 blessed hours on a plane. Thirteen hours, to have uninterrupted conversations, to watch whole movies, to write, read and doodle, even sit and stare out a window if I feel like it.

It is too much think that I will be in Japan. JA. PAN!!!!

So instead of trying to think about the unthinkable, I’ve doodled, built Lego houses, and let the sink overflow while I stare blankly at the bubbles, thinking of “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, a story that seems so like my own right now.

For someone who gets a thrill from whipped cream topped coffee and an hour spent browsing a bookstore, Japan just seems so ridiculously decadent. I feel at once insanely excited and yet so guilty, taking such an extravagant voyage.

For now, my little men are keeping me from floating away. The ceremonies of our days, the meals, stories, the ravenous appetite of need that is childhood, all offer me a thousand distractions from the terrifying and triumphant knowledge that I will be half a world away in only a blink.
