(this little piece is available in the shop)
Three days.
Just three days.
In only three eensy weensy little days, I will be on a plane to Japan.
JAPAN!
You would think that I would have begun to ready myself, packing, preparing my family to be without me (you know, making lots of lists for Daddy, finishing up laundry, paying bills, stocking the freezer..) but no, I haven’t done a thing.
It’s like I just can’t wrap my mind around it. It’s too much.
Too much to think about leaving my family for 7 days.
Too much to think that I will be waking up when they are eating dinner.
Too much to think about 13 blessed hours on a plane. Thirteen hours, to have uninterrupted conversations, to watch whole movies, to write, read and doodle, even sit and stare out a window if I feel like it.
It is too much think that I will be in Japan. JA. PAN!!!!
So instead of trying to think about the unthinkable, I’ve doodled, built Lego houses, and let the sink overflow while I stare blankly at the bubbles, thinking of “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, a story that seems so like my own right now.
For someone who gets a thrill from whipped cream topped coffee and an hour spent browsing a bookstore, Japan just seems so ridiculously decadent. I feel at once insanely excited and yet so guilty, taking such an extravagant voyage.
For now, my little men are keeping me from floating away. The ceremonies of our days, the meals, stories, the ravenous appetite of need that is childhood, all offer me a thousand distractions from the terrifying and triumphant knowledge that I will be half a world away in only a blink.

Really, how long does it take to pack? And your men can just do takeout.
I can’t wait to hear all about your travels and see Japan through your eyes until I can go myself. Safe journey, my friend.
Have fun!!!
hi. i’m new to your blog, but want to say bon voyage. have a safe trip over here to japan and ask (if i may) why are you coming? sight seeing?
So soon. I can only imagine how you are feeling – that intense juxtaposition of excitement and anticipation combined with anxiety (will they cope without me?) and trepidation. Your week will fly by – such fun, energy, aloneness, learning, seeing, hearing, tasting. How wonderful to be able to experience it all on your own, and then take it all home to your family to experience. They will be fine – I doubt they care about having clean clothes or pre-made food! Just throw a few clothes in a backpack and spend up big while you’re there!! (Actually, I have heard reports that it’s hard to buy clothes in Japan as Western woman have very different body shapes, maybe you should pack lots).
I can’t wait to hear about your amazing adventure, to see your images (photos and paper cuts) and inspiration. Travel well, happy, healthy, safely. xx
Oh Stefani, how exciting. Soak it up, savour it all, it’ll go so very fast. Can’t wait to hear all about it!
Stefani, it is going to be awesome! Color me green with envy.

it’s going to be an awesome trip. but you HAD better start packing, girl!
(and thanks for the silk stockings link – i’ve read kate chopin, but not sure i’ve read that one before – it was delightful).
Oh my gosh, you will have so much fun. It’ll probably be strange at first, and you’ll miss your family terribly, but just think of all you’ll bring back for them…
Are you sure you don’t have just a little bit of room in your suitcase for lil’ (ha!) ol’ me?
And I LOVE that print on this post—-in fact, can I change my swap preference to this one?? I love it!!
It all sounds so lovely. I too, experience a thrill wandering through the bookstore with my whipped cream topped coffee (and red sprinkles this time of year!).I am enjoying your paper cuts very much. They capture something truly magical about being a woman and a mama.
the ceremonies of our days…

I’m excited for you and I can’t wait to hear and see your adventure.
