Oh girls.
Hold on to your hats!
There is big news today, BIG NEWS!
I have grown something that we can eat! And not only have I grown something that we can eat, I have done it in FOUR little days. Me! Me with my no tomato growin' black thumb!
It all started when we had a picnic with my dearly beloved's folks. His mother brought us a fabulous lunch that included sandwhiches with sprouts. Well I've heard no end of it ever since.
It was the "best sandwich he ever had."
He hasn't "had sprouts in SO long."
He "forgot how good they tasted." Yada yada.
Well I do try to do right by my man, so if it was sprouts he wanted, by gosh he was gonna get 'em.
Little did I know that they would grow so fast and so well that you can almost literally watch the grass grow. It's crazy!
Here they were yesterday.
And here they are today!
Nuts right?
As an added bonus I now get to drone on about how I toiled with bent back and sweaty brow just so that I might give him sprouts.
Think he'll buy it?
p.s. if you're wondering, we got our good here.

We got one of these for Christmas and I love it.
Happy Sprouting!
Wooohooo for indoor farming! Your man is lucky to have a wife to even attempt to make a sandwich like his mama. I don’t even try to make my MIL’s tamales. I just let her do that.
yummo…we love sprouts here…..and so easy, i mean very hard…to grow!
Oooh exciting! And ditto on vintage chica — I fail at the “just like my mother” stuff. I’ve just bought two tomato plants, though, and we’ve got a pear tree (and the neighbors have many loquats that they share), so I’m trying — never grown anything productive before, though.
Hats off to you, and happy sandwich eating!
You are hilarious…I love this! I’ve got to go grow me and my man some sprouts too!
Ha ha! Too funny. See, you’re better at this growing stuff than you give yourself credit for. My kids would love watching it grow…but then I’d wonder if they’d eat it?
I am laughing at Vintage Chica…I feel the same way. Although, he’s confessed most of the stuff I make tastes way better than his mama’s. There’s only one thing I don’t touch, and that’s his favorite cake. I just can’t make it “right”!
Oh!!!! Lucky you! We had a pear tree growing up. I can’t still taste the preserves and pear cake!
Seriously? You can make tamales? My Momo made such good tamales, but I’ve been too chicken to try. Tutorial please!
Oh yes, there’s loads of things I can’t make as well as his mom… And honestly I agree with him on that. That woman makes magic in her kitchen!
Have you tried sprouting the peas or wheat? I’m anxious to see how those come out.
Love, love, love sprouts. I haven’t tried growing my own for eating but I’ll be sure to be doing so soon. =) Thanks!
We were out in the garden today and I came in and read your post. All I can say is “Happy Sprouting”. They look great and yummy.

That reminds me to get ours out again!! Thanks!
A few blogging mamas have been growing sprouts this week, and I am inspired to get mine out of the basement and give it a try again – maybe the girls will take to them now that they’re a bit older. Thanks!
Wow!~ How fun is that!
I have been wanting to try to do this and I appreciated the link to your source for the goods. Now I can get started. I can’t remember how I found your blog, but I like it. Thanks.
My mother-in-law is of French descent and my father-in-law is Italian. Both are amazing amazing cooks. Thank goodness my husband had 6 years in the navy eating hockey pucks and brown sauce. I still won’t attempt to cook my in-laws’ Cheese Souffle, Beef Wellington, or Risotto a la pesca torri (spelling way off) but I am the Lasagna Queen.
The spouts look tempting but other than sandwiches/wraps and salads what do you do with them? That looks like a lot of sprouts to me. Stir-fry?
I remember growing sprouts as a kid – such fun! Thanks for a great idea, I’m sure my little one would love this too. In fact, if she helped grow them she might even consider eating them.
Way to go on the growing. I think the 4 day growing season would suit us just fine.
This I gotta try! I actually don’t like sprouts at all, but I am fascinated by the whole growing overnight thing.
oooo–add me to the list of “haven’t had sprouts in forever!” (by the way, there’s a great tutorial on tamales on cookinglight.com) Made them over Christmas, I’ve never done them before, and they were a huge hit! You just use your broiler pan filled with water to steam them.
I love spouting, the best winter local veggies around. Have you done lentils yet???? they are my favorite. When you do try them in this salad.

We were thinking lettuce in our garden, but then thought about the bugs we’d have to deal with. So I can imagine a yummy sandwich with sprouts and tomatoes instead. Thanks for the link! We’ll be anxiously awaiting ours!
Oh man! I love sprouts too… especially on sandwiches. Now I’ve got something else to add to my ‘gift list’… maybe someone will get it for me for Mother’s Day!!! Cool!
Yay!! Ivhave to tell ya… I have tried and failed at so many garden projects. This one is super satisfying. Happy sprouting!
I have not, but it sounds like we will have to try them!
Thanks for the tip!
Oh yay! I’m going to have to give those tamales a go for sure! Thank you!!
Maybe they’ll (ahem) grow on you
It just might! My older two are all about the sprouts now. Amazing what they’ll eat if they have a hand in growing, picking or cooking it.
Oh yes, you are most definitely the lasagna queen!
Not sure about stir fry… I know you can do bean sprouts that way , but it seems like they might go all slimey. I’ll run a little experiment and let you know.
What fun!! Love that second pic!
oooh that looks like so much fun…congratulations on making it grow
Yes.I can make some rockin’ tamales. But it is a two day process the way
Sergio’s mom makes them.
Oh, these recipes! Gotta get to working on them after this whole
unschooling summer thing is on its way. Oh yes, and the Little BOD.
E
We actually just sprouted peas in a pot, and we’re ready to move them into a bigger one to grow during the winter (in the window). Wouldn’t it be cool to a beans in the winter??
