If you are vegan, you should stop reading right now.
No, really.
Come back tomorrow, and we’ll have a nice little chat, but today, friend, you’d better be on your way.
If you eat meat, but would rather not think about where it came from, you’d best be moving along too.
It’s okay, really. I don’t mind.
See, I’ve got this husband, who likes to fish.
And since I’m his wife, and it is my sworn duty to be a pain in the butt now and then, just to keep him young, I have to talk lots of smack about how catch and release is code for “didn’t get a bite”, and how as much he goes fishing you’d think I’d actually see some fish now and then. I have to say things like, “do you actually drop your line in the water, baby? Or is this just a good excuse to drink beer with a nice view?”
Truth is, I know good and well that he catches fish all the time and throws them back, less out of a good-hearted conservationist spirit, and more because neither one of us wants to clean them.
Every now and again, though, he has to prove a point.
He has to line up stinky, flopping carcasses.
Which, of course, my boys think is grand.
I think it’s a good reason to buy stock in Purel antibacterial hand wash.
He has to turn my driveway into a processing plant.
I know where my food comes from, and that’s okay by me, but as weenie-fied as it sounds, I really don’t want to look it in the eye before I eat it.
I have a freezer full of yummy fish now though, and will be making the best ever fish tacos tomorrow, so I’m clearly not all that opposed to stinky, flopping fish, now am I? Plus, it *is* kinda cool, having just begun reading “Farmer Boy” with the guys, to know that if need be, our Papa can head out into the cold, blustery wilds and bring home sustenance.
It will be a while though before I make a wisecrack about the empty live wells. A long, long, LONG while, because next time, he says he’s going to teach me to clean the catch.
Heavens.

Uggghhh that last picture!!!! What an understanding wife you are!
yum! I love fish tacos! What time am I coming for dinner tomorrow?
I’ll bring the beer! Yummy fish tacos!
I have a husband who likes to fish too, but more often, he likes to hunt deer and pheasant. Which is fine by me, because I like to eat almost everything, but I, also, don’t particularly want to look my dinner in the eye before I consume it. Luckily, all of that processing happens at someone else’s house. Although, at one point, we did have a feathery (or was it furry?) something in our freezer for a friend…
Dude, I LOVE fish tacos. Can I come for dinner?
Hey, so I looked your dinner in the eye (excellent photo that last one!) and I’m ready to eat fish tacos! Ok? Looks like maybe you should have a dinner party for all of us out here? Great!
Ah, the driveway processing plant gave your boys a great story. We were all impressed by the story of the overloaded electric knife!
ew.
i’m so glad my husband doesn’t fish! he’s allowed to cool salmon patties – occasionally, on the grill – outside.
i

the kids got fishing poles for christmas
and my jerry looked as excited as they were…
ha ha! love it!
I love crumbed fish cooked by someone else but UGH raw fish gives me the willies! Men don’t know how much they owe their wives!
We don’t eat red meat, but we do eat chicken and fish and I don’t mind looking a fish in the eye before eating it. We used to go fishing when the kids were little and cleaning the fish was my job. I don’t know why it was, it just was. I did it gladly and barbecued those guys with joy. Somehow I am not squeamish about fish, whereas I am very sorrowful about the other animals, such as pigs and cows.
Enjoy your fish tacos, that sounds great!
Let me just start this by saying that I am a vegetarian – yet I really loved these photos, and your story. I think that if people *have* to eat meat then it really is wonderful that they catch, kill, clean it themselves. I’m sure you enjoy and appreciate it more – appreciate it’s life as well as it’s death.
So – send your husband out fishing more, learn to clean the next catch, and look as many meals in the eye as possible!
i’d watch that for yummy fish tacos. i am just saying.
That’s a lot of fish! Love that last shot.
I bet the boys are excited to go out and catch some of their own!
My Dad is an avid fisherman and is always fishing and bringing home his catch. Try as I might, I never cared for fish. I have tried so many kinds of fish, home cooked, restaurant cooked, but I can’t get over that initial “fishy” taste. Pretty much the only fish I eat are Mrs. Pauls breaded fish filets and tuna. Hubby feels the same as me so there is no worries at mealtimes when Hubby would be in the mood for fish and I would have to suck it up and cook it.
I enjoyed this post, though. What kind of fish were they?
I never was one to turn down a dare.
But sweet heavens, that was more than my grocery store buying butt was ready for!
And imho, that last shot is the biggest catch of the day! (tell your husband that little nugget)

Yummy, i love making fish tacos too. at least 3 times a month. my hubby fishes for halibut in the ocean, i hate when he goes as it is a tad dangerous but i do love the bounty and my freezer full of yummy fish. i do not clean it, the most i will do is pack it away in the vaccum pak:)Your boys are sooo cute, can you imagine how many fish you will have when they get bigger and ALL go fishing together!
cleaning them? oh. gross. but i love the pictures! and you know, i’ve never had fish tacos. can i come over?
