(If you will indulge me in just one more produce post, I will promise to move on…)
“Now that’s a peach!”
That’s what my James said, juice running down his arm, as he hung from a branch, sampling the farmer’s wares.
My little fruit lover has been longing for that sweetness ever since he asked me to buy peaches a few weeks back at the grocery store, which turned out to taste “exactly like nothing would taste if nothing could taste,” in his estimation.
You might imagine then, that when my man discovered that these peaches were REAL peaches, peaches that taste exactly how the summer sunset would taste if the summer sunset could taste, he picked himself silly.
When every basket in a 10 mile radius had been filled, he wiped his brow, cursed the creation of biting insects, declared that farming was for the birds, and that he’s moving to Canada where it is not 100 degrees
This, precisely 2.3 seconds before he said, “Do you think we could pick some blackberries too? There’s only a few left in the whole summer!”
Even a small farmer can understand, you see, that this time, this gathering time, is as fleetingly precious as it is laborious, and that when the shoes are kicked off, when the ice cream has been scooped, the fruits of one’s labor are sweet indeed.

Ahem. Up here in Canada it was indeed 100 degrees today. And a plethora of mosquitos, blackberries and peaches.
Oh that is too too funny! I’ll be sure to tell him that Canada is not looking like a much of a refuge at the moment
We lived in Oregon where the blackberry bushes were so wild and plentiful the farmers considered them a nuisance. I can’t count the hours we spent picking and eating. Yummy, sunny, happy summer hours. (Not 100 degrees, by the way) Now, when we go home for a summer visit, the first thing my daughter wants to do is go berry picking. Fleeting, sweet days indeed.
I just bought a half-bushel basket of peaches myself on Fri. from a church group raising money for one of their projects. (I don’t do trees.)
Tomorrow after I get up, I’ll begin freezing them, so I can have some this winter. Yummm!
OMG that look soooooooooooo summery and happy and fruity and just perfect!!! I wish we had some peaches here too but we ‘ only ‘ have apples and pears..also good.
you have lovely boys!!!
Love the bandana shorts your fruit lover is wearing. I made the same ones, one in yellow and another in pink, for my fruit loving daughter. Thanks so much for the ‘how-to’ it was a fun project.
Oh to have a fresh peach! I have searched high and low at every grocery store in my town. Days like that of living in the city make me yearn for a farmer’s market like the one on every road in the country where I grew up. And I am loving the shorts. And assuming you made them! How adorable. I really must learn to sew.
wow. it would be mighty fine to go peach picking. Mighty fine indeed.
um. please feel free to go on with the produce posts as your pictures and prose have been fabulous!!!!! the stained hands full of blackberries!!! i am over the moon looking at these today. and tell your son that i have had those peaches that taste like nothing and i wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. i think, in fact, they are worse than nothing… like nothing with the texture of wet boxboard. blech. my mom calls them pithy. dreamy and orange with the juice running down your arms is the way to go! and, with all those peaches, i am going to assume we’ll be getting some peach pie at the closet cafe???
I was just looking at your peach ice cream recipe yesterday! No excuses now!
Can you tell me where you went to pick the peaches? I believe we’re in the same area and we’d LOVE to taste some of that peachy goodness ourselves!
Mmmmmm…blackberries! I love summer time!
Several summers ago when we were touring the orchards of the Hood River Valley in Oregon, one of the farmers took the time to teach my son about peaches and how to pick a good one. He said, “It’s not a good peach unless the juice drips off your elbows.” Now every summer we go on a quest for the perfect “elbow” peaches!
Oh my goodness those blackberries are HUGE!!!!! And yummy looking!!!
yum, yum, and Love that first photo. Now I have to go eat a peach, my mouth is watering!
Those peaches look so tasty just looking at them in the picture and those blackberries are so plump. We have at least a month before the blackberries will be ready to pick from the hedgerows here (but they are free as they are everywhere on the local park)
oh summer, how i love thee! those blackberries and ‘cream look delicious! do you have an ice cream maker? All of a sudden i’m thinking some homemade peach ice cream would be perfect! although i don’t have an ice cream maker. but still….
beautiful photographs, friend. xo.
Man we are still a ways off from the blackberry and peach harvest in the PacNW.
I enjoyed following you around the farm though. Wish you had smell-a-vision, there is nothing like the smell of fresh peaches.
Your pictures are lovely!
The peaches and berries look so good. Lately I just want to take a bite out of everything on your blog. It seems the idyllic summer.
I love that pic of your family with all the gorgeous sky above them. A picture perfect summer from the looks of things. How very nice!
this was great…i love to hear about your produce! anything fresh goes quick here. we went to the farmers market on friday and everything lasted until saturday afternoon! and also know your pictures are so awesome!
Man, I’d love to go peach picking. But I have the scratches and gouges to show for my buckets and buckets of blackberry picking. We found a huge, wild thicket, right in the middle of the city this summer. The picking is sweaty and a bit painful and it’s so worth it. (Love the paw print bandana pants. I found tie dye bandanas at AC Moore this weekend — they’re in line to make some groovy pants!) –Nancy in NC
This might be way off the subject, and a little strange to boot…but I can’t help but notice every time your pictures catch one of them…your boys’ feet are so clean!! (LOL) how DO you do it? Just kidding…don’t need to know. But wow, I can just taste the peaches and blackberries from here in my stuffy cubicle!
the fruit looks gorgeous – what a wonderful day…and i’ll add my voice to those saying that unfortunately, there would be no refuge from the heat up here in canada – but it’s a beautiful visit anyway
texas looks so beautiful, as do those berry stained fingers!
You are so lucky to have blackberries already! Love your photos and those peach baskets!
Where do you go to pick?
