Several months back, I was asked to write an article for our local foodie mag, Edible Austin.
To say that I was excited would be putting it very, VERY mildly.
I have loved this magazine for a long time… it's so earthy and tasty and full of every yummy thing that is Austin. What's more, I have, since I was a very little girl, always dreamed that one fine day I'd see my name in print – that I'd have something to say that was worthy of print, that is.
Now in all my silly school girl imaginings, I thought it would be on a children's book, or better still a novel… but I'm a (very blessed) mom and that means that frankly by the end of the day I'm lucky if I can string together two coherent sentences, let alone a novel.
So I figured it would be a while, if ever, that I'd see my name in publication.
Even after Edible Austin asked for my article, I had my doubts as to whether they'd actually print it. I felt pretty sure that they'd weigh my handful of words against the amazing writers, chefs, restaurant owners and visionary farmers that grace their pages and find me lacking.
So imagine my surprise to find, while standing in line at Whole Foods with three cranky kids and an armful of grocery bags that there's a beautiful, smart magazine with my byline in it.
And you know while it's not the great American novel that my eager college-girl self envisioned one day publishing, I have to say, if my claim to printed fame ends up being a small story about family and tradition and the foods that bind us together… well it just doesn't get more delicious than that!

Isn’t it funny how things bring our dearest blog pals to mind? I can’t look at a blueberry without thinking of you?
… or a swinging chicken for that matter!
That, or an apricot
I never looked at it that way, but by gosh, truer words were never spoken! Around about the time I have a moment to really write, my contemporaries might have the time to READ!
I’m going to smile good and long over that revelation!
I loved reading this. I found your blog thanks to Oh my stinkin heck (on Pioneer Woman homeschools). I loved reading your article. I live in MO and have memories of my grandma canning tomatoes and green beans. I wish I had learned more from her. Thank you for your beautiful writing and stories of family.
awesome! congratulations…!
hooray!
i am so thrilled for you, stef!
Congratulations, Stefani! You are very worthy of seeing your name in print! The article looks really beautiful.
Congratulations! Great article!
My Great Grandmother taught her daughters and their daughters how to make jelly, but I never took the time to get her to show me and now, I will never have that time back. But, the one thing I do have is a video of her making pepper jelly with her best friend-so at least I can watch that while I make my own. I take inspiration from your article and will make the time to get in the kitchen with my mom and grandma and learn and listen and ask and enjoy the stories of our family.
Have a fabulous weekend!
LOVE it!!!!!
Stef this is wonderful! You are a very talented lady in so many ways!
Even though we have been loving Nova Scotia things like this make me yearn for a return to California! Family ties… roots… traditions!
Xanne? Xanna?
Love, love the article. And plum jelly.
Wow! Congratulations, Stefani! And what a sweet article!
Congrats Stefani! Off to read.
Congrats Stefani!!! I am never surprised when you are getting the recoginition that you deserve. You are a wonderful mother; wonderfully creative and exciting to watch. I love the way you write. You are contagious and magnetic. Sunshiney.
I just read your article and it is lovely, lovely. I so enjoy your writing. It reminds me of all the things I want to do and be. Your writing always makes me teary. And it isn’t from the spicy vegetable soup I am eating right now.
I have been wanting to make jam for years now. I’ve never made jam with anyone and really want to try it out. My boys are old enough and I’ve been thinking this is the year. Your article is the 2nd I’ve read about jam making in the past couple of days. I think there will be some jam in my kitchen soon.
Thanks so much for sharing.
I just finally had a chance to read the article itself–what a great read. I love how you bring the reader so far away from the start of the story that the last line–which ought to be predictable in hindsight–just zings and gets you in the heart.
Congrats Stefani! Awesome! I couldn’t have said any of that better myself, but it so wonderfully explains how I feel about gardening and preserving! Mind in I link your article?
