Good To The Last Drop

by Stefani on 17-September-2008

I'm not saying everyday… just, you know SOMEtimes, when the late afternoon whining hour has arrived, and my wild banshees are still running full tilt, their poor mama needs a little something to set the spark plugs to firing again.

Enter the iced coffee. My boys call it a "mama smoothie."

Amen, brother. It does indeed smooth Mama out a bit.

The benefits of the iced coffee are two-fold:

First, there's the boy-energy expending pounding of the coffee cubes. (My, but they do love this step. They're like little mallet-wielding coffee pushers, "Mama, don't you feel like having a mama smoothie yet????")

Getting Hammered

Then, there's the swift and delicious caffeine injection that makes possible the late day crunch.

Mama's Afternoon Pick Me Up

A few frozen cubes of left over coffee (about 8 – maybe more), pounded to oblivion, a cup of milk (maybe less), and a little sugar (or honey) tossed in the blender, and the afternoon is golden.

Scratch that, the afternoon is velvety brown, delicious and satisfying.

Good to the last drop.

Amen, Sister.

Bridget September 17, 2008 at 8:02 pm

I’m going to have to try that! I’ve always wondered what to do with leftover coffee.

Alicia A. September 17, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Holy crap. Coffee ice cubes for a frozen coffee drink.

You are truly gifted. Gotta go freeze the leftover coffee now…

Leslie September 17, 2008 at 8:13 pm

that looks like a very yummy treat! Little boys love to help out with tools no matter what it is for!

Joy September 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Now. that. is. a. good. idea.

*thunk*

Why didn’t I think of that?

I see velvety, brown, delicious afternoons in my future….

You’re fabulous.

Allison September 17, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I am sooo jealous right now. Being pregnant has it’s downside. I totally miss iced coffee.

Diane September 17, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Ah, my kindred spirit! That’s what I do, too.

*clink*

Here’s to us at the whining hour with velvet deliciousness at hand!

Maria September 17, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Ok that is a great idea and sounds delicious! I’m glad I checked out your blog today – tommorrow afternoon guess what I’m going to be having!

Kara September 17, 2008 at 8:56 pm

What a GREAT idea! Being that I live alone, this is a wonderful solution for left over coffee. Thanks!!

Julie Alvarez September 17, 2008 at 9:56 pm

I am so going to try this..! Not the hammer part, my ladie is too rough, I KNOW she will hurt.

Katie September 17, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Oh…yummm! It is late right now and that still sounds delish!

Great idea, as always!

Amy September 18, 2008 at 3:36 am

You’re preachin’ to the choir Sistah!

Pippa September 18, 2008 at 3:50 am

What a beautiful and brilliant idea! And what enthusiastic and loving kiddies! =)

Love,
Pippa

You’re a genius!!! That looks so yummy and can’t wait to try!

Dallas September 18, 2008 at 4:30 am

That looks like such a great idea – and very tasty too.

Lynn September 18, 2008 at 5:13 am

I am surprised they don’t use the stone hammer…

Mandy September 18, 2008 at 5:31 am

You just changed my life forever.

Bethany September 18, 2008 at 5:54 am

Yummy! Is it fair to have one in the morning AND the afternoon? Probably not, but I can dream.

Tracy September 18, 2008 at 5:59 am

yum. I have also found that steeping coffee overnight (or 12ish hours) in room temperature water produces some of the best iced coffee I’ve ever tasted. And I don’t usually like my coffee cold.

Julie @ Letter9 September 18, 2008 at 6:23 am

DAMN that looks (and sounds) good. You are a GENIUS!

Casey September 18, 2008 at 6:27 am

Going to do that this very afternoon. Probably twice.

Lisa Clarke September 18, 2008 at 6:38 am

I think I have to try that! I discovered Mint Mocha Chip Frappaccinos this summer, and while they’re delicious, they’re just too pricey to have all the time.

This looks like it could make a great substitute, especially with a little dribble of chocolate syrup and a drop of peppermint extract…

Meredith September 18, 2008 at 7:01 am

Delicious idea. I will try it today during the ‘arsenic hour’ at our house. Thanks!

Linn September 18, 2008 at 7:04 am

That sounds delicious, and we do have another month of summer around here. Hmmm…

Regina September 18, 2008 at 7:10 am

Brilliance!!

Stephanie B September 18, 2008 at 7:40 am

In case you are interested in another version… I saw one here a while ago.. http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/cold-brewed-iced-coffee/

Harmony September 18, 2008 at 8:03 am

I love cold coffee drinks. That is strange because I hate regular coffee! My husband drinks coffee and I love the idea of freezing the leftovers for an iced coffee drink, thanks so much for sharing that! Much cheaper then buying them!

Crystal September 18, 2008 at 8:14 am

I have been reving up with plain ole hot tea in the afternoons… I like your drink better. I am gonna have to go fill some ice cube trays with leftover coffe right now. Mmmmmmmm….

elissa September 18, 2008 at 10:59 am

sounds delicious and what a great way to avoid wasting coffee!

YayaOrchid September 18, 2008 at 11:04 am

Oh, that does look delicious! I have got to try that. I like Lisa Clarke’s idea (above) with the peppermint extract. First thought, I’ve got to buy some ice cube trays. Don’t have any. :(

Caroline September 18, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Cool idea…I never thought of saving the unused coffee in ice cube trays for later. And I am a total iced coffee junkie. Thanks for another great idea! Cheers!

Kelly September 18, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Another reason why I love your blog!

Stephanie September 18, 2008 at 1:20 pm

yummm, I will definitely be trying this over the next couple of days. Usually I just keep my left over coffee in the fridge and mix it with milk and chocolate syrup, instant iced mocha, but I like the frosty yummyness of this one!

liz September 18, 2008 at 2:16 pm

This is pure genius. I love you.

Jules September 18, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I hear ya sister. Indeed.

jessica September 18, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Now that is a genius idea! When I was in my iced coffee craze of July I should have done that!

Alissa September 18, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Oooh. That’s a REALLY good use of small boy energy in the afternoon.

christi September 18, 2008 at 7:55 pm

oh yum! i wish i had a coffee percolator to do this with- all i have is instant! :(
sigh, it so suddenly became warm down here i kinda miss winter…
thank you for this delicious idea!

leslie September 20, 2008 at 12:46 pm

why haven’t i ever thought about freezing my leftover coffee???
you are a genius!

Nicole September 20, 2008 at 2:31 pm

i’m so doing this! like now !~

dianeinjapan September 21, 2008 at 3:02 am
