“It’s the truth, it’s actual, everything is satisfactual…”
Things are blooming.
Skies are blue, and my kids have learned to appreciate Chinese food.
A warm, short sleeve kind of day resulted in endless giggles and grins. There were smiles as big as the completely stinking HUGE hippo who condescended to delight my boy from here to eternity by playing kissy face with him.
This, was the wrap you up in warmth, golden evening light.
“Wonderful feeling, wonderful day….”
Now, I know that there are some of you out there who are still snowed in, miserable and dreaming of spring with all your might and mean. And I get it, really I do, because while you have your February, Texas has its September.
September, when everyone else is wearing long sleeves an enjoying crisp days but our spirits are still crushed under the weight of never bloody ending heat. September, when everything is dead and brown and turned to dust, including our dispositions. September just plain sucks.
So believe me, I understand, and I feel for you. I know how it is to feel like the season has to change or you just will scream until you split in two.
That is why, friends, I will do my best to quiet the song that’s welling up, and just hum a little, until you can sing along with me. But sister, when at long last you see tender green things and itty bitty buds on the trees too, you raise your voice and we’ll “Zippity Do Dah” together to beat the band. Okay?

OK, OK, I’ll try not to kick you from a-far, grumping along in the cold. We had icey snow today; it took me two hours to get into the cities for my bookbinding class. Wah.
Love that bokeh in the first picture and that hippo image is wonderful!
Oh dear. You are my favourite inspiration at the moment. Every time my day turn grey and my writing stalls in lack of inspiration, I click on your blog and if I am in luck there will be a new entry. It is not a question of whether or not it will be good and inspiring, because ALL your writing this far have made me happy in one way or another. As a mother of three kids myself I am in awe of your ability to make wonderful fresh stories every day. Thank you.
oh my… such lovely photos!
the peacock is lovely
Mr. Bluebird’s on my shoulder….you’ve got me singing a happy song this morning and smiling at that hippo picture!
Spring is not HERE here — but it’s in the air and the light and the sounds. So reading about your spring is just fine.
A few weeks ago you posted pics of your garden starts. Where did you find the little bag things you’re using. I’ve looked high and low.
Thanks for sharing so much.
Oh heck, sing your song loud, girlfriend! The first branch made me SMILE. There’s some hope in those blooms for those of us that have a few months to go. And the HIPPO!!! I laughed out loud and the rest of the family had to come see what was so funny. Excellent! All that color! This may be the only place I see so much color all day long, please keep it coming… (It’s -25 this morning. I am happy to see someone somewhere is in short sleeves. I really am. Even if it’s not me…)
so thoughtful, you! keep on humming, it might make things go faster.
I remember, last September, when I was frolicking in the orangeness and crisp fallness, and you were still stuck in brown hot September. I do. It’s a shame we can’t all experience the bad parts at the same time, I suppose, but at the same time, that is what makes this world interesting.
I’m singing Zippity Do Dah right now with a high of 71. I’m enjoying it while I can because before you know it, it will be to too hot to step foot out the door.
yup,I can feel it and see it too.Thank goodness. Here’s to slow meanders through the woods and picnics on the porch.
I love the hippo picture.Where was that?
Zippidee-ayyyy….
enjoy it while you got it, stef!
LOVE the pictures in this post!!!! And it makes me miss Texas.
I think I’m beginning to swelter already in anticipation of the sauna that will soon wrap us all.
Thank you — these photos are beautiful! Spring is not far away for us a little north of you… We are getting a peak at sunshine today and I can’t wait for more. Sing away, dear!
While I am insanely jealous and looking at a forecast of SNOW for tomorrow, I thank you for the hope….and the hippo. Very cool.
I was just thinking how great it is that we share our small worlds with each other on our blogs. Some have snow while others flowers. All the different places, and phases we live in, all shared. I think it’s beautiful.
Hi, Love the hippo picture. Do feel sorry for him though, he should be wallowing in a muddy pool in his home land.
Anyway, Ive been tagged and must pass it on, so TAG – please share seven things about yourself, some random, some odd…
I look forward to reading your response!
I enjoy living vicariously through you…Celebrate the spring for those of us who can’t yet…
That hippo is hilarious!
Really brightened my day.
–Anna
yes, i will sing with you.
Oh, no, don’t be quiet about it! I can hear the song, too, and it’s just too much to keep it in!!
And you’re so right, so very very right, about our September (I’m on the FloraBama line on the Gulf Coast). Shudder. Let’s not think about September right now.
Tomorrow is March!
p.s. LOVE the Chinese photo.
Beautiful. Indeed.
From a snowbound Canuck.
1. Nice bokeh shot! (That one’s from my husband.)
2. What a handsome hippo! I love his beady eyes.
3. We’re in the midst of a blizzard today, but it’s MARCH! Spring is definitely on its way, and I am content in knowing that. Enjoy your lovely weather!
That hippo pic is AWESOME.
Awesome pictures! And that hippo one is PRICELESS.
What is that tree in pic#1? I got similar shots in Santa Fe, NM!…

and I loooovvvee the hippo pic!
I loved your post. While I have only lived in Texas for …going on 3 yrs, I have learned that this is the time of year I rejoice. When spring arrives, the temps aren’t too, too hot yet. It is a bit hard to explain to the friends and family up north. Yes, it is a lovely spring here..but I sure do miss those crisp autumn days and the occasional snow storm. I have had fun following along with your posts. Take care!
When I saw the title I started singing in my head, “Sweet potato pie and I shut my mouth”. Then I read on. Oops. Wrong Song of the South.
I know what you mean about February — it’s the same for us in Florida. Last chance to wear sweaters and make soup and chili before the heat sets in.
