It’s been awful quiet here at the ranch this week, I know. It’s just that… well… it’s so dang gorgeous outside. We’ve been soaking up every last drop! Who has time for computer screens when there’s all this sunshine to be had?
We’ve spent a crazy amount of our waking hours outdoors lately, catching frogs and bugs, crawdads and tadpoles. Okay, one tadpole, but he’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen. We’re calling him Goliath.
I feel like a kid waiting in line for my turn on the ferris wheel. It’s just almost, but not quite, but kind of… SPRING. Any second it will be here in earnest and I’m about to explode with excitement over it.
So rather than trying to string together any coherent sentences, I’ll just give you my giddy little list of things we’re loving right now:
1. A boy who has learned to swing himself. He probably could have done it so much earlier, but why, when you have doting brothers to push you?
2. Grilling dinner.
3. The never ceasing sound of a cardinal vigorously claiming our yard as his very own.
4. The return of frog songs at dusk.
5. The butterflies, or at least some of them, are back! The Journey North folks say that the monarchs will be here any day too!
6. Flip flops and shorts have made a come back too. Not only is it wonderful to see all those bare legs and toes, it is SO nice not to find a million discarded (always singular, never matching) socks flung about my house.
7. Awesome new trail snacks, found via Knitting Iris. She’s right, they’re stupid good. We use pecans and add just a little bit of honey (more for binding than sweetness). We like them kind of cold, so we make them and stick them in the fridge.
8. Finishing our latest read aloud, Little House on Rocky Ridge, atop a quilt spread over the grass. (I’ll be sharing a monstrous list of our favorite springtime reads tomorrow.)
9. New fiddle songs played barefoot in the yard.
10. My daffodils are blooming!

11. Mud on our wellies.
12. A little dog joining us on creek walks…. and he’s just as good a frog and bug catcher as any boy!
I could go on, but a sunny day calls…
Happy new spring to you!

Pennsylvania is a little behind you but I can’t wait to be enjoying some of the same things. =)
We’ve been feeling rather Spring-y here this week too. No flip-flops or shorts yet, we even still need jackets, but the bulbs are poking through the ground and we even have some blooming crocus.
I am looking forward to the book list. Have you read Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat? My son loves it, it is a spring book and to do with boys and owls – so good!
I was just dreaming of flip flop weather as I folded socks. We’re on spring break here next week and I am hoping that Spring pays Northern Colorado a visit.
I think it’s so funny to see how different things look in different parts of the country. You say “almost spring,” but you’re wearing shorts and flip flops! Here in Massachusetts, “almost spring” means I’m only wearing one sweater (rather than layering them) and sometimes take my gloves off in the afternoon. We still spend as much time as possible outside, though…our appreciation of our “springy” weather is very high!
I must say I turned a few shades of green reading your post, spring hasn’t really sprung up here in my part of Canada yet. I’m so looking forward to flip flops, reading to the kids outside, and mostly being out of this house for more then 20 minutes at a time due to the cold.
Looking forward to the reading list and more pics of your outdoor adventures! Gorgeous flowers by the way!
Your Spring is our Summer!
Stefani, I love reading your blog. You are one truly amazing mother! Your boys are very lucky.
Oh, I love how different spring makes its entrance in different places. I just blogged about the sound of running water, obscured from view by snow and ice. Hey, we celebrate what we can. I second the Owls in the Family recommendation. Looking forward hearing about other spring reads, too. My seasonal book order will wait for your list.
I love this list. We’re just heading into fall here and I’ve been thinking about all the wonderfulness myself. Love the pics too!
Sounds like you are right where you ought to be. Here’s to flip flops and butterflies returning!
Great photo on the swing Stefani. Looks like you’re going to have to change your header (smile).
Oh, I have to admit I am a wee bit jealous! We still have a ways to go before we’re there…but hooray for flip-flops, swings and butterflies!
Enjoy that beauty of spring! We’re getting glimpses of it here in Minnesota even! ♥
i know! i know! i’m missing your more steady posts, but like you, we’re outside so much it’s easier to handle!
spring is great!
