“… you gotta have a fiddle in the band…”
My oldest has been looking on, watching James and I feel our way around our guitars for some time now. He’s been playing the piano for a while, but has had a longing of another sort… to fiddle, just like his great grandpa did.
With his birthday coming, we’d been scouring Craig’s List to find one that was affordable and in good condition. When I found a 1/2 size for a song, I jumped, and then asked around James’ guitar class for a good teacher.
Well, the teacher turned out to be phenomenal. We had our first lesson today, and loved her on the spot. The fiddle… not so much. It’s TWO sizes too big!
Oh well, considering the good deal that we got, and the rate at which this boy grows, it won’t be long before it’s a good fit. Until then, he’s renting an itty bitty one, and Daddy and I get to mess around on the 1/2 size.
Did you catch that? A boy on guitar, a boy on the fiddle, a mama on guitar, and Daddy on a fiddle, plus a wee man banging on the piano….
And not a one of us can actually play!
A joyful noise, that’s what we’ll call it. I think we might be handing out ear plugs at the door for a while!

Oh yay!! You got it! How I’d love to be there to hear the joyful noise. G can bring his saxophone to really amp up the joy.
oh, thanks so much for the guitar lessons link!! i learned to play when i was 8, and right through high school i could still play .. then over the years i lost it. dominic took lessons a few years ago and i wanted to much to pick it back up again.
i *did* take some violin lessons (!!) when jack took them when he was 4/5 .. i wish he wanted to take violin again, but he’s focused on learning the drums! :^)
I hope you can give us a sample of your new family band; I would love to hear it.

How great is that!? Thanks for the link. I have a guitar and took about a years’ worth of lessons 20 years ago, but all I can really do is strum a handful of basic chords. It’s enough to sing some of my favorite Indigo Girls tunes, but it would be great to do more…

I used to play the violin (fiddle) as a child and can’t wait to introduce it to my little ones. I think we’ve got an old upright piano coming our way for now… Fingers crossed!

This is great! How old is your little fiddle player and what size was recommended? My 5 1/2 year old has been itching to play the violin for some time now.
My dad has always said, “If you can’t sing good, sing loud.” So I would say, “If you can’t play well, play together.” That family band looks like fun. I love the fiddle! That’s great! Our kids play various instruments (stand up bass, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and viola- with a violin in the works for the youngest). I can’t play anything, but I told them if we start some weird jug band I could do the washboard or the jug. I think I could do that.
Good luck to you all. It is so worth it when they finally get to the point where they’re good at it.
Oh, just saw that you’ve got Rodrigo y Gabriela on your list. We just saw them last week and they were fantastic! So amazing.
Oh, I used to play the violin and I miss it so so much. My husband has a “music room”–with a banjo, a mandolin, and several basses and guitars. He’s always trying to get me to start playing again. Sigh.
