I knew the day would come when he'd want to walk around with earphones in all the time – talking in a too loud voice over his own personal soundtrack.
I didn't know he'd be six.
This boy LIVES for Legos, "contraptions" and music. He hears songs on the radio and BEGS me to download them for him. He brings out his piggy bank and chases me around with $.99 until I consent.
I also knew at some point that I'd get questions like, "Can I color my hair black?" and "Also, could I paint my room black?"
Let me repeat, he's SIX!
When I asked him why he likes black so much he said, "Cuz it's 'dude-y' and I"m a dude." Thankfully, his version of "dude" is more space ranger/ robot creator and less goth than his color selections might imply.
I don't know where he gets this stuff.
He, and his iPod, filled about a million little cups with soil yesterday, and one by one, we planted our fall seeds. Broccoli, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, and various herbs.
He was listening to "Goats on Film" which really is "Girls on Film."
It took me a while to figure that one out.
When I did, and told him what they are really saying, he said, "Well, I'm gonna keep singing it my way, cuz I like goats better anyway."
Well hallelujah for that! He's still a little boy after all

HA! I misread it first as Girls on Film and thought… no way…
Stellar taste in tunes, that boy… Let’s see, was his mama a girl in the 80s? : )
Lucky you! A fall crop!!
That is so funny!! Yeah, I think you’ve got nothing to worry about with this one. Not going goth on you. . . just ALL BOY!
Kari
That’s awesome!
My favorite “word play” was when my son asked why he couldn’t have a BOY cheese, instead of a GIRL cheese. Translation: GRILLED cheese. HA!
Yep, I really need to get on my fall crops. Like NOW!
YES! he reminds me SO much of micah…they would be goat lovin’ dude buddies.
well said, friend.
My son lives for all the same stuff. Lego o.b.s.e.s.s.e.d! He asked for an IPOD, every song is his favorite, and can he get a mohawk someday? He is also six.
You should check this out:

Practically every Lego instruction set ever! We have logged many happy building hours with these.
that’s sooooooooo funny! i love it “goats on film.” ahahahhahahaha. can you imagine the video? wet & sweaty goats in a boxing ring?
Three cheers for goats!
Lovely! My little guy gets an MP3 player for Christmas this year – his current faves are Sandra Boynton songs – especially Bad Bad Babies -and he’s trying to sing them all. I have to leave the room sometimes so I don’t laugh at him…it is too cute!
I love it! That’s one of my favorite songs. Your boy and mine have so much in common. I wish they could hang out and create with Lego together.
love the goat on film – that is priceless!!
Love it.
All I can say is be glad you have boys. The “downward tween creep” you describe has entered our lives as the kind of mean girl trauma I didn’t expect until 4-6th grade.
Yes. backstabbing. rumors. passive-aggressive behavior.
On the bright side, my girl hates all things Hannah Montana. Who is her favorite girl singer? Suzanne Vega.
I had a six year old who skipped along singing “Luka,” a song about child abuse.
Whatcha gonna do?
goats on film….cracking me up.
Hahahahahaha!!! Is this what I have to look forward to? I was having a hard enough time with my six year old daughter in her pop star glasses, (play) make up, and requests for the latest cellphone that she can tell me all the functions for.
Zoiks.
Very cute.
Oh, what a sweetie pie! Still a little boy after all.
duran duran!
gotta love little boys (and goats).
Oh my this is too funny – my son just turned 7. Legos obsessed to the max! I’m still wondering about ‘his iPod’ — HE HAS AN IPOD!??? I just bought my first iPod mini for myself….I’m 41.
Oh yes! I should clarify, Janice.
It is actually my old iPod. I got an iPhone a while back though, so he’s using it
Delurking to say … that could be written about my 8-year-old boy, although the colour choice would be blue. But the rock music (or stories, but certainly a constant need for noise), the legos, the contraptions and the too old for himself? Oh that is soooo familiar!!!!
it really is better “goats on film”. my big duran duran phase was the 6th grade. at 6yo i think i was hard into KISS!!!
Ha, I see now!! Too funny.
I have to say I am so glad I found your blog! (I added it to my google reader thing – first time I’ve done that – looks like its working!)
I found you from a link on someone elses blog – most likely metalsmithing related….anyway I’m happy to ‘meet’ you.
I see you homeschool – I’m somewhat envious – as a single mom though its not within my means – but I would if I could!
Such is life.
Janice
It could be worse. When my cousin was little a certain song by Madonna came out and was very popular. Like a Virgin. Yeah, it was funny. I just remember my grandma cringing while my cousin ran around with her walkman on singing Like a Version. It still cracks me up!
So you mean to tell me that the day will come when my two tiny boys will actually help me with the garden? At two, my oldest already has a mind of his own, a favorite song and a hunkering for Legos. Then again, who doesn’t like legos?
This is a great way to get kids involved in gardening. Letting them know where their food comes from is important. WTG!
i love reading your blog, because so much of what you share really resonates with me. its so funny how they have their own little personality’s and it makes you wonder so often, what in the world are they thinking?
fall crops, eh? i wanted to plant some stuff, but i thought i was too late. hhmm… i’ll have to look in to that…
You mean we could plant fall vegetable seeds NOW? Or is that only in the SOuth?
I’m sure he’ll always be your little boy. Even when he dyes his hair and pierces his ear (or is that ‘out’ nowadays).
My six year old is asking for a black bedroom too. I don’t think I can bring myself to do it!
Now, if your lucky, he’ll like goats better for at least 10 years.
If only they stayed that way. My 15 yo definately prefers girls over goats, and just had his first kiss..watch out girls!
“When I did, and told him what they are really saying, he said, “Well, I’m gonna keep singing it my way, cuz I like goats better anyway.”
Thanks for the laugh this morning!
)
uh oh, is it time to start the fall seeds? I need to get on the ball!
i’d like to know how many interesting hits you get to your blog from people who google “goats on film”!!! ha!
My guy is 4…he is obsessed with Star Wars and Legos, loves music, and his favorite color…
BLACK and has been for at least a year. It is practically all we can get him to wear.
Gotta love boys!
