First it rained, so the boys put on a “Pupit” show, played a few rousing rounds of War and then we set to work making little boats out of corks and testing them in the kitchen sink. It does my heart good to see my saved (for no apparent reason) corks go to good use.
Finally, the sun set us free! We walked our boats down to the creek. Man has it risen! It was great fun to float them, but the boys were so nervous about losing their creations! We saw a biggo turtle on a white water adventure, a heron having a minnow feast and we caught a bunch of tadpoles to bring home for further investigation. At the end of our splashing romp we saw some manner of brown snake.
I did such a fine job of not freaking out! It went like this, “Boys, come see this (big nasty evil ginormous) little snake! Not too close now. Take a long look and we’ll try to identify him with the field guides when we get home. Remember, this is why we stick to the nice open spots at the creek and stay out of the tall grass. (RUN RUN RUN!). Now (insert confident grin) how about we go home, for some popsicles?. (DEAR GOD RUN!!!)
Enjoy your Memorial Day everyone. And thank you, truly thank you, to all the men and women who have made it possible for us to embrace our freedom!
