Mario, The Musical

by Stefani on 19-April-2010

We like music.

We believe that Mozart was the Jerry Lee Lewis of his time, that the 70’s really did rock, and that the 80s proved that music can only be made better by generous doses of hairspray.

We think about things like, “what would happen if Lady Gaga and Ella Fitzgerald did a duet?” and “I wonder what Jimi Hendrix would have played if he had played the fiddle?”

Music is a part of our day to day.

Just today, my oldest discovered that Irish jigs make Jasper (our dog) howl in the most pitiful, sorrowful way. My middle son spent a good hour trying to work out the beginning riff of “All the Young Dudes” on his guitar. My youngest laid in his bed after dinner, eyes closed, listening to Billy Joel on the record player. He plays a mean air piano, that boy, and while he hasn’t yet had a lesson, he insists that he IS our resident piano man.

I believe him.

So really, I’m sort of used to daily musical discovery, but I have to admit, the latest came as a real surprise.

It all started with a request. They wanted to know if we could make a list of all the instruments in the orchestra and then listen to each one on You Tube. The idea was that they would come to know the sound of each one individually and then they’d make a game of trying to pick them out when listening to the classical radio station.

Wanna know what we discovered, quite by accident?

There exists, on You Tube, a video of someone on just about any and every imaginable instrument playing… are you ready?….

The theme to Super Mario.

For real. Try it and see. It’s totally fun. Just think up an instrument an then do a search.

This was, by far, our favorite.

It’s got every flute in this house working overtime 🙂

Sooooo cool! My son and I really enjoyed this. Then we had to search for videos of guitarists playing Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog theme songs 🙂 We have guitar, piano, flute, small drums from India and Africa and various other instruments in our home too.

Oh my, is that ever funny! Hard to believe that someone could even come up with the idea for that performance. It is a catchy little tune though. Brings me back to my childhood video game playing days. Maybe we can dust of my hubby’s old Nintendo and get it working. Thanks for the laugh!

Awesome! My kids (who were supposed to be doing other things but just happened to be in the room when I hit play) were captivated! They want more, more, more.

Thanks for lightening my day, In looking at Super Mario themes on YouTube I found Play! – a video game symphony (www.play-symphony.com). Very fun!

Oh, Stefani! That a cool find! He is great… my husband beatboxes and the kids love it and love to mimic him! He will love this!
I think it is wonderful you have music in your home… we need more of it!
