"I am always doing that which I can not do,
in order that I may learn how to do it." – Picasso
At the last minute today I decided to get over my fear of being in the presence of "real artists." So, I did a very quick sketch of this week's Illustration Friday topic and submitted it.
The topic is "hollow," so I whipped up this little drawing, gave it a quick color wash and was, all in all, pretty pleased with it, and also pretty pleased with myself for working up the nerve to join in with all those amazingly talented people.
That was until I noticed that all my hatred of this dang heat and the subsequent pining for fall has created a little bit of an anachronistic flaw in this illustration. Baby birds? In the fall?
Crud.
Oh well. It's my world and I can draw it any way I want to. Right?
Right.
There's lots of other flaws in this sketch. Lots. But that's alright. It's a start.
Now it's your turn. Go out and do something that scares you. Even if you mess it up, you'll still be proud of yourself.
Have a great weekend, folks!

Good for you for taking a risk! I’m always pushing myself to take risks, but so glad that I do. Here’s the funny thing. I saw your drawing and just thought, “how wonderful!” I would have never noticed the fall vs. baby birds thing until I read your next paragraph. Isn’t that just a fine example of how we point flaws out about ourselves (or the things we do) when probably no one else would notice?! Gave me a good chuckle… I do that sort of stuff to myself all the time. You have a great weekend too! (It’s been ages since I left a comment here so I figured it’s about time.)
Wonderful! You did it!! I wouldn’t have thought about the baby birds in the fall, either – I was just delighted with your interpretation of the word!
I was thinking how great it would look on my wall…I love the baby birds
It’s beautiful. Baby birds in the fall sounds quite nice, actually. And, Yay!! for taking creative risks!!
Oh that’s funny, and so very true. It is so much easier to see our own flaws than it is to see them in others. Then again, there’s those folks who see fault so easily in others and are blind to their own. It’s so hard to find that middle ground isn’t it?… grace.
Good to see you here again!
it was you who spurred me on. You know that right?
Thanks so much, Marcia!
Thanks so much, sweet mama!
And you know what? I think I will always see you in my mind’s eye whenever I hear the word “creative.” Always. It’s your word now, officially, and it’s a pretty great one to own, don’t you think?
you always bring me a giggle. thanks. and i adore your art! yes, art! yeah for you.
Hi!
This sketch is just lovely, I wish I could draw like that! Good on you for putting yourself out there!
Ali
Oh I wish I had half the talent you do. What a beautiful picture, and who cares if it’s fall and there’s baby birds. It’s your art and you can do what you want with it. And by the way….you ARE a “real” artist
Thanks for the inspiration. I think I might submit a piece for a writing contest. I’m terrified, but it can’t hurt, right?
Do you know how much I adore your artwork? Yeah, I do.
Good for you for stretching yourself!
This is very good for a sketch! It could be a story of baby birds who were miracles to be born at such a time! ^_^
I look forward or back on fall all the time! It has a sweet mystery about it… and when we are in the middle of it I feel connected. And I have seen baby birds in the fall!!!
KEEP DRAWING, PAINTING, POSTING and CREATING!!!!
You too are one very creative mama! Well done… the sketch and the risk! Wonderful!
Great job! Hope to see you post work on illustration friday in the future! The blue birds and the orange leaves contrast nicely too:)
I think it’s lovely, and that you should definitely consider yourself a real artist.
Do it! Do it!!!!
You know what? I love that idea! I really really do.
I think it would make a nice story…. the sweet tale of orphaned babies, born at the wrong time, and the girl who saves them…
Thank you! and thanks for visiting!
Lorilee! So good to “see you”
I owe you an email… soon, soon!
Goodness, thank you so much Kacey, for stopping by and being so encouraging!
you are being too hard on yourself…it is fantastic!
You’ve got talent, girl!
