This was a very special day for me.
Very special.
There are times, as a parent, when you are extraordinarly privilaged, to see the world open in the eyes of your child. Today was one of those days.
For the very first time, my oldest two men visited an art museum. The Blanton Museum of Art, to be exact.
We were so immersed and involved in creating yesterday, and then this morning I was informed that their schoolroom, turned “Discovery Room” has now been deemed their “studio.” They were crafting away in there, asking if they could hold an opening, and did I think that they could sell their work.
The time was ripe for a trip downtown.
It was so fun to see how differently they approached the pieces.
Luke, my oldest, my detail oriented child, was very taken with the more classical works. He lingered over Italian and French paintings, intricate and ornate, with their religious themes.
He scribbled down name after name of works and artists that particularly struck his fancy. I don’t know why he made those lists, and I did not ask. I thought it was important for me to stand back and just let him experience it all without too much narration.
James was bored to tears with those paintings, but was positively GLOWING over the more contemporary installations. He really appreciated the gobs of paint, interesting media (MAMA! Feathers!) He ran from piece to piece, inhaling them. He didn’t ponder them or soak them in the way his brother did, he jetted back and forth, no rhyme nor reason, just giddy to be in their presence.
His favorites were the enormous baloon sculptures which hung from the ceiling,
and the outdoor piece by Jesus Raphael Soto.
Both of my men liked to be nose to nose with the art.
Close, and then closer.
They did not want to leave.
All the way home they talked, at light speed, about all they had seen, what surprised them, what they loved. They sketched in their books and made plans for new artistic endeavors.
Life. Is. So. Good.

So glad we talked about this today! The art museum is so amazing. I loved hearing about how they each found their own paths in the museum. Nothing could be better than that.
How soul-nourishing it must be to watch them open, explore, evolove, grow into beings of your making – yet so completely different, complex. It seems you have a lot of art exhibitions you need to visit now. (We have a Warhol exhibition coming soon, with a kids section. I’m excited to see what my little one makes of it).
i love to see children in the art museum. the best. because there is no pretense. and i love luke’s list. wonder whether he’ll come back to that. looks like a great day.
(and i love the new banner, too!)
wonderful day!
i have to laugh, though — at our museum, we’re not allowed to touch the wall (and the boys want to get SO close) and the last time we were there, we were closely shadowed by not one, but TWO guys in suits (hands clasped behind their backs, whistling softly and trying not to stare directly at us) whose job seemed to be to make sure my boys didn’t destroy a national treasure. ;^)
What a fantastic post. I can completely understand how you’re feeling as a mother. Watching your sons develop their own love and appreciation of something so near to your heart without your insisting upon it has to be one of the most fulfilling feelings!
I LOVED the first photo yesterday (they were all good, but that one just struck a chord for me) of your oldest covered in blue chalk dust and completely immersed in his work. GORGEOUS photo!
When my middle son was about their age he started a Dollar Wall of Art- inspired by the $1 Store. Any masterpiece for only a buck- no one who walked into our house for the month that it lasted was safe from the hard sell.
Lovely pictures from the museum.
I LOVE your new banner. You are really talented with those silhouettes! I hope I have little ones following behind me one day…
Yeah art!
That Soto piece brings back memories. We saw it (or one almost identical to it) at MALBA in Buenos Aires during a visit in 2003. My son, who was not quite three at the time, took off running through the tubes and whacked his head on one of the posts. Nonetheless, we love the sculpture.
now THAT is inspiring! love your new banner, btw!
I am surprised! They’ve amazed me once again!
Very cool!
Stef, your photography skills are growing at insane speed! Good job!!
Love you,
LA
PS> The new banner is so so good!!
what a rewarding trip to the museum. =)
oh, what good stuff, stefani!
so awesome! i can’t wait to take my little sweeties when they are a bit older…
Oh, that makes me so happy, to hear about young people discovering art! Isn’t it wonderful watching them soaking it in for the first time? I’m a nose to nose with the art person too, so I relate.
amazing! thanks for the trip to the museum, i felt like i went with you guys.
