Lucky us… my Dad had a business meeting an hour and a half south of us, in San Antionio. So, he and my mom asked the boys and I to come along for the ride.
It was just one night, but man, did we manage to cram a lot of learning and soaking, walking, oohing, ahhing and good fun out of it!
First, Grumpy (that’s what they call my Dad) and Nana, treated us to Mexican food and a boat ride on the River Walk. The twinkly lights and chilly night were magic.
Afterwards, a night time stroll past the Alamo, hand holding, stories of heros of old, then a cozy night tucked into a poshy piled high bed in a fancy pants hotel. (Thanks, Nana and Grumpy!)
In the morning, a swim in the giant tub, followed by breakfast with a mariachi, at the historic Mi Tierra,
… where we learned that refried beans are GOOOOOOOOD on breakfast tacos, and that Mexico has a wonderful way with pastries.
Some Mexican market shopping, some street car riding, some more river walking and a tour of the inside of the Alamo = a very good day indeed.
We came home full of inspiration… to know more about the Alamo, Texas History, our Mexican heritage…
not to mention Lucha Libre. (that’s my boy, on the street car, in a mask that he absolutely HAD to have at the Mexican market)
As for the Mama, I came home inspired to get back to cutting..
Can I just say, field trips ROCK!?!

Wow, what an adventurous outing! And your cutting inspires ME … this is definitely something I want to try my hand at for the holidays.
Mmmm…love San Antonio. Ever been out to see the missions? They’re amazing!
Oh my gosh I love San Antonio. When I spent a year in the armpit of Texas, going to San Antonio was my only salvation. So wonderful!
You’ve inspired me to visit the Mexican markets here. We’re rich in Mexican heritage and I never seek it out. Shame on me!
I love that picture of your son with the mask – I would use it for your Christmas cards.
I was also thinking of you when I was unpacking my Danish paper cuts for Christmas…
Such luxury, inspiration, mouth-watering. You should put alerts to not look at those links unless one is well rested and feed first – oooohhhh I could ease into one of those beds right now at that hotel.
I saw some fabric today, with silhouettes – made me think of you!
See, you are an inspiration to all of us. Happy cutting.
Looks like a rockin’ field trip indeed. My son would so love that mask and I could use a night at the Emily Morgan. What a special treat for all of you.
oh wow! So fun and about the best feild trip I could think of! -kb
PS – I know you’ve been tagged so many times lately, but you always make me laugh in your tags. So, I’ve tagged you – again.

)
Wow, looks like lots of fun! Field trips rock.
oh yeah, that field trip looks good to me!
Hey! We’ve been talking about the Alamo around here a lot in the past few weeks but we don’t get to GO THERE!!! Lucky you and yours! I want to have a breakfast taco! And cookies, cookies, cookies! And by the way, I spent all afternoon yesterday polishing my kitchen table and I still can’t see my reflection in it. Your great grandmother was clearly more of a housewife than I’ll ever be.
What an adventure! It’s been a long time since I’ve been to San Antonio. I MUST find one of those masks for my boy. Nacho Libre is one of our favorite movies.
Oh, I can’t wait to move to Austin. It seems that even though its in the middle of Texas there sure are a lot of fun things to do around it. San Antonio must feel like your in a whole other country! Thanks for showing us around. I can’t wait to visit!
Lovely pictures of San Antonio. You truly captured it’s ‘essence.’ Nice work Stef!
It was like a little field trip for my mind…Thanks! I miss the cultural crossings of San Antonio.
so great…love the mask & the flowy cut out flags…plus your trip reminded me of one of my favorite all time movies, ‘pee wee’s big adventure’ “there’s no basement in the alamo!”
Wow, what a fun whirlwind of activities. I remember some wonderful breakfasts in Mexico—-ones that I wouldn’t have thought about before our visit. That bakery looks oh so yummy and intriguing. Thank you for sharing…
Oh those paper cuttings. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
Oh, my! What a flood of memories this post has brought on. We lived in Northen Mexico for two years. Refried beans, made with “real” lard, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those were the good ole’days. All those pastries were at the local grocery store. You would pick up a tray (round, circular, waitress kind),a pair of tongs and walk around piling your tray high.OK, I could really go on. It looks like a wonderful trip! San Antonio is a super fun place.
