In terms of “low key” Ryder’s birthday was the very last note on the scale.
We kept it small, and as much guilt as that gives to my plan-a-big-hooplah-make-the-cake-from-scratch-go-crazy-with-the-theme heart, it was actually wonderful, to just hang with my big boy, hold him lots, and celebrate him.
He was thrilled, with the paper chain decorations that his brothers made “all by ourselves, Ryder!” making his cake alongside me, putting the sprinkles on himself, helping put together his long awaited play kitchen, hot dogs, and being sung to by his Mom and Dad, brothers, and all four grandparents.
(not the gorgeous all wood kitchen that I’d wanted, but he is OVER THE MOON about it.)
He just beamed.
With great ceremony we measured him in the pantry, and found that he has grown MUCH over the last year. I think my heart grows with him.
And I have to say, that looking around the table, at all the people that I love, made it very hard to think about waking up this morning while they all lay sleeping, and heading out in the dark for a plane that will take me so far away.
But I’m off, in only moments… wish me luck, and happy journeys to you as well!
