There’s just nothing like coming home, is there?
I mean, you know, after that whole dirty car, piles of stuff to unpack, the resulting laundry marathon, the restocking of the pantry, bills to pay, emails and calls to return, business of reestablishing a home.
Once you get past all that, it’s nice to be home, together, under not just one roof, but OUR one roof.
We celebrated our homecoming with our first fire of the season.
Oh who am I kidding? It was our first fire in about 8 years.
I was always a big chicken about having a fire near a curious little toddler, so we haven’t had one in a very very long time.
There’s something to be said for kids getting bigger.
I feel like we’re hitting our big kid stride a little now…
… big kids playing cards by the fire (one of our very favorite games, Wig Out),
big kids all working together on a puzzle (and no one eating the pieces),
…big kids that I can send out in the cold to get more logs! WAHOO!
One of the most fun things about having big kids though are the shows that they put on for us now.
Every evening, the master of ceremonies puts on his mask and cape and announces the commencement of the “Funky Circus.”
Daddy and I pour a glass of red, settle in by the fire, and are treated to sword dueling, guitar playing, dance routines, puppet shows, joke telling, magic tricks and more.
Really, you just never can tell what the Funky Circus will think of next.
Thus far, my favorite has been the appearance of the “Death Defying Purple Migmajig.”
While his brothers were playing a fiddle/guitar duet (an entirely made up and slightly ear splitting tune) my littlest snuck off to the back room for a costume change.
When the serenade was done, the boys went back stage (to our school room) to plan for the next act and we heard, “Oh RYDER! What have you done?”
This is the part where mama and papa stop smiling and listen very closely.
“Just go and announce me! I’m called, The Death Defying Purple Migmajig!”
“No way. I’m not announcing you. Uh uh! You do it. Just wait ’til they see what you’ve done!”
“Fine…. NOW PRESENTING…. THE PURPLE MIGMAJIG!!!!”
Then, that little turkey came tearing in the room looking like this:
We probably shouldn’t have laughed.
We probably shouldn’t condone this sort of thing.
But dang if that kid isn’t good clean(ish) family fun.
Enjoy your weekend everyone.
Stay warm, and we’ll see you on Monday!

Glad you’re all back safe and sound, and settled in!
But sad- the Purple Wigamajig’s photo didn’t come through! Your nightly circus sounds like a riot.
That is hilarious! So cute.
HAHAA
Oh how could you possibly not laugh?!!!
That fire guard is the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.
So is the purple Migmajig.
Oh my that is cute. Nice to hear about hitting your “big kid” stride. I am steeped in the baby toddler phase, and though it is lovely, I can’t help but look longingly at board games and chapter books longingly, imagining a time when they will become a regular part of our lives.
hilarious, adorable and i’m so looking forward to the day when my own kids stop eating the puzzle pieces!
getting our older kid on has been awesome (especially regarding puzzles) I love watching them grow and moving from constant tending to letting them get a little wild adn see what happens.
Ha! That’s great. I would have laughed, too. And bigger kids are a lot of fun. They stay that way until hormones kick in…
LOL! So funny!
Ha ha!! That’s great. It’s nice to day dream about no one eating the puzzle pieces too.
I’m so glad you’re back! Welcome home. I’m with Grandmother — that’s washable pen yes?! ; )
cute! Your in-house entertainment sounds great.
I’m looking forward to the big kid stage a bit I must say. No eating dirt and buttons, and maybe I might be able to convince one of them that vacuuming is fun! or even cleaning the shower. he he.
love it!
love it! It reminds me a picture that my mom took of me at that age…
That fire looks positively wonderful.
Oh my! That’s funny. Did it wash off?
You really are a great blogger. i love reading your posts. and i’m a blog junkie. i’ve been around the block a few times. =)
This is just another heart warming, entertaining, great photo having presntation of your life.
I love it!
love it! and those big eyes!
my little one is into the body art too. i just let it ride and try to discourage it from appearing on the face.
That is too funny! Your family night sounds so fun! We have recently started a family movie and popcorn night with our 3 & 5 year olds. I have really enjoyed it!
Oh!! What an adorable little turkey. Too funny! I’d have laughed too.
Those first pictures make me yearn for a fireplace. Your post makes me less sad that my babes are growing up. And the purple migmajig is just irresistable. I would have laughed too.
Well, at least the purple didn’t extend to his hair! Purple Migmajig–that should be next year’s costume for Halloween!
Lovely fire. I do miss having a fireplace. As messy as it was, we always toasted marshmallows over the first fire of the season–when we had a fireplace. Toasting over the gas burner on the stove doesn’t give me quite the same feeling…
Wow that looks so beautiful, sitting by the fire. Of course, we don’t have anything like that here – we only see that in the movies.
so nice to have you & your ‘Death Defying Purple Migmajig’ back.
Thanks for the laugh this Sunday evening. x
Hilarious and very Funky!
It’s amazing how you all of a sudden you realize you’ve moved on the to next stage! I have three boys and they are just hitting the “grown up” stage but it is still fun! Enjoy the shows . . . pretty soon you will be feigning awe at their new truck tires and listening to them complain about their dorm roommates. That is kinda cool too!
That is so funny!
My sister has 4 boys (just had her girl this week) and they do the circus too. They are not in big kid age, but have some ambition. I can’t wait to see them over Christmas.
How resourceful! How creative! How could you not love every bit of it?
Oh, you totally have me BEAT! Click on the link to see what my daughter did on Saturday. It must have been the week for markers. Thanks for the laugh!

That is hilarious! I love it! I just read it to my husband and we’re both still chuckling because our 3-year old is infamous for this. He’s currently on a 5-year ban from markers. He’ll sadly tell you he can’t use markers until he’s 8 and this is exactly the reason why. It is awfully funny though isn’t it?
That is priceless and just FABULOUS!
I have never commented, but I always read. We just got back from a long family road trip with our three little’uns and oh-my-gosh I have tears rolling down my face. I was laughing so hard that I could barely finish reading this post to my husband!
What a funny photo, I have a little boy who would do just the same thing, although we are not quite at the not eating puzzle pieces yet
oh my! i really needed that smile this morning… thanks! your fireplace is GORGEOUS… love the stone. also, good to see the hope and joy in “everyone getting a bit older.” if it brings us anything like the funky circus, i am all for it!
I am loving the stages we’re at right now, but the big kids stage is one I’m very excited about too.
I laughed at your purple migmajig. We have a rule about pens and markers at our house, repeated often. “Paper or skin. Paper or skin.” Skin washes – even if it takes a week. lol
oh we have so many pictures like this! I’ve just given up on the say no to coloring on the belly.
What a good laugh! Thanks for that one.
I remember when Zeb did the same thing with black permanant marker. I think he was around 3 or so. It’s impossible not to laugh at such artistic expression, is it not? :]
