Oh, y’all. I am spent.
I think my lazy rear end got soft over the winter.
Three days in the sun and the wind about did me in.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, mild temperatures, sunset over the lake, wading in the (FREEZING!) water, boat riding, butterfly catching, deer watching, sitting by the water and reading while your kids just soak in the very best of life, it was wonderful, but I am dead. DOG. tired.
Here’s are the highlights:
Water+tent+well worn sheets = rock-a-bye-baby-in-the-tree-tops kind of sleeping. The five us, piled up on our air mattresses, with the stars above us, and the sound of the water lapping just a few feet away, was just about heaven. I mean, I’m pretty certain it would get old at some point, but then so would chocolate cake, and I haven’t turned down a slice yet, you know?
Speaking of food… is it just me, or does every little thing taste better when you are camping? Maybe it is the fact that my husband does most of the cooking when we’re camping, or maybe it is just that you work up such an appetite romping around in the wild, but whatever it is, even a peanut butter sandwhich just tastes better outside.
And yes, there was a good bit of romping. The very self same children who will not venture one big toe into the bathtub if the temperature is not just so, will flop belly first into a FUH REEZING lake like it ain’t no thang. Go figure.
Because I am the mom though, and it is my sworn duty to annoy the pants off my children, I insisted that the boys did their reading, math and handwriting at a picnic table. Honestly though, I think they learned a lot more from watching the mallard chase away the goose only to be chased by the black swan (why is it black? Do they come in other colors? Is it rare? Do the other swans make fun of it?). Or by noting that the grass was all bent and crushed in one area, and pondering the reasons why (only to find a big bunch of deer there the next morning) or watching the space shuttle pass overhead at exactly 8:35, and wondering if the people on board could see the big dipper too, or how come it starts in Houston and lands in Florida, and do they carry it back on trucks or just build a new one, and does the Space Station have a Wii, and and and…
It might have looked a little like vacation, but eager young minds NEVER take a day off. Oh to have that energy…
I think I might sleep for the next two straight days!
Have a wonderful weekend, friends, and come on back Monday… I feel a contest coming on…

what a fantastic way to spend the week! I’m quite envious. And yes, a campfire makes absolutely everything taste better – that and the fresh air. Welcome back!
I may be a tad jealous of all the warmth in these pictures in words…I’m freezing and it snowed here today…and and and WAH! I can’t wait to come visit you..didn’t I mention it? oh sorry! *grin*
There’s nothing like that kind of exhaustion though, so many memories made and so much unplanned fun.
Your pictures look warm and wonderful… but I get the feeling my toes would have been miserable! ha. What great parents you are to just up and do this. These are fun memories.
I am sure that like everyone else, I am crazy jealous since winter willl.not.let.go here.
wow. that campsite looks quite dreamy. how great that you guys were able to get away with the tents.
What a wonderful time away. We set up the tent for the first time this season in our backyard and daddy and Makena slept outside. Can’t wait to go camping ourselves!
Aaaaahhhh…heaven. And a contest?
Wow, that looks stupendous!
I suffer from “camping post traumatic stress disorder” resulting from trips as a child which looked like the opposite of that picture. If I could be guaranteed an excursion like that I might be convinced to snatch up a tent and take my own boys out to the woods for a night or two.
Welcome back and enjoy your rest.
fun, spontaneous, fun! Love the whole idea of this trip and the pictures!
You are making me homesick for my Lone Star state. That tent pic is precious. And that swan! Magnificent!
what a wonderful trip! have a great weekend.
oh, don’t forget to enter my children’s goods giveaway before the 31st!
oh, there is hope for spring! These pictures made me rejoice!! As I sit her in snow….but we have camping planned! It’ around the corner!!
ahhh, texas in the spring…
Amazing pictures. That one in the tent is beautiful. Sounds like you had a marvelous time. I’m jealous of your sunshine and green grass
So, so, lovely! It’s snowing here today. I’m so envious.
Oh, and PS: the shuttle takes off from Florida and most of the time lands in Florida, unless the weather is bad for a long stretch of time – then they can land in a number of other places.
You might be thinking Houston as that is who they are talking to during the whole thing, even though they are in FL or landing in FL.
Wow, with the snow still here, days like that are months off for us. Sounds and looks divine!!! Your photography is amazing.
Oh, that sounds like a lovely adventure! Can I come next time? And clams? That is just the neatest thing.
My family and I definitely need to get out doors more. I think that will be my big push this summer, as I have been such a hermit.
stefani, your photography is truly exeptional. truly.
Seriously, the lighting in that first picture – amazing. Who wouldn’t want to curl up in that cozy piece of camping heaven?
we love camping, too – i wish it weren’t so hard to prepare for, though!
and you’re right – everything tastes better when you’re camping!
oh what fun! i so have the camping bug…might just have to pitch the tent on the back porch until it warms up a bit. and that black swan is stunning! we were watching the pair of ducks that live in our canal the other day when my little guy announced that he would like to eat them! i do believe i’m raising a little mountain man – hopefully he won’t go “into the wild” (which i just watched for the second time and it is haunting me). hope your bones are getting some rest this weekend.
I was wondering if any of my Texans saw the space shuttle on its way in! Awesome!
Looks like a fantastic trip. We are still knee deep in snow…

Ahhhh spring….
It feels so good to get out in the sunshine and lounge with a good book and the campfire cooking … or even a nice back yard BBQ would be wonderful!
Just reading about your trip makes me exhausted! And does me good. That first picture’s perfect.
How wonderful. I agree about the food. Everything does taste better while camping!
oh that sounds wonderful. sleeping under the stars with only the sounds of nature…. ahhhh…. we’ve got to get camping before all the bugs wake up from winters slumber.
All our swans in West Australia are black, it’s our state animal emblem, sooooo …….I think he headed north for the summer. It’s funny if we see a white swan, they’re the ferals here, they were brought in from the UK. Black swans are the best
))) We have been bitten by the camping bug this year and have spent two weeks under canvas and have had a ball.

What a wonderful weekend! I hope to be doing that soon with my family! We just need a good weekend to pop up – and we’ll be there! My hubby and I used to camp when we were dating… but haven’t been since having kids… time to change that – this year for sure!
