Hey there!
As promised, I have a little bit of a spring book list for you. Here’s the thing though… it is really REALLY hard for me to settle on just a FEW good books. So instead I picked a few of my favorite things about spring and the good reads that go along with them.

Here goes:
Lazy days laying in the grass while we take turns reading aloud-
Some of our favorite sunny read alouds are – The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (This is a wonderful book, but it does discuss evolution and one of the characters is trying his hand at making alcohol. If those aren’t issues you’re ready to discuss with your kiddos, this might not be your book), Strawberry Girl, Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte’s Web, Little Farm in the Ozarks, A Child’s Garden of Verses (it HAS to be this version because Gyo Fujikawa’s illustrations are just beyond compare).
Jelly jars full of wildflowers and the chubby, grubby hands that pick them for me –
- Miss Ladybird’s Wildflowers, Legend of the Bluebonnet, Legend of the Indian Paintbrush , The Boy Who Grew Flowers, The Empty Pot
Bare legs running fast after winged things -
The Bee Tree, When Lightening Comes in A Jar, Sam and the Firefly
Looking for fairies in the woods and dragons in the clouds –
The Egg, There’s No Such Thing As A Dragon, Faeries
The amazing, hope-filled, rattle of seed packets and new green things –
The Carrot Seed, The Curious Garden, Jack’s Garden
Berry-stained smiles and the “clink” of canning jars sealing up our spring memories –
Jamberry, Blueberries for Sal, Berry Magic, The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the Hungry Bear , The First Strawberries
Mud between our toes, puddles to jump in and wiggly wet things -
The Caterpillar and The Pollywog, A Frog Thing, Duck, Crawdad Creek, Near One Cattail
Rain drops that chase each other down window panes and thunder in the middle of the night -
Thundercake, The Storm Book, Come On Rain
The ceaseless industry and song of birds in spring-
My Nest is Best, How Robin Saved Spring, Rechenka’s Eggs, The Golden Egg Book, Flap Your Wings
Laying on a blanket and connecting the dots in the heavens -
Old quilts and sun-dried sheets to dream under –
Mother Earth and Her Children, The Quilt, The Quilt Story, The Keeping Quilt.
You can find loads more of our most beloved springtime activities in our Book of Days Spring Editions. Each and every activity is accompanied by a parent field guide which suggests ways to expand the activity and also lists bunches of great go-along books. You can see many of the books mentioned in our spring editions by visiting our Book Shelf.
And how about you? What are your favorite springtime stories?

It may be a little quiet here for the next few days. We’re feeling that old road trip itch coming on
Happy trails to you then, until we meet again!

As always, an amazing post! What a fabulous idea! You are wonderful! Have a great road trip!

Stephani, Thank you for this great list. I’ve heard only good things about “evolution…” can’t wait to read it. I’m printing this for our library trip. We’ve read many of these but it’s time to revisit some favorites and discover the new ones. I LOVE books.
Thank you, I’ve been waiting for the list! I would only add A Seed is Sleepy and An Egg is Quiet. The urchins love looking at all those seeds and eggs.
Great pics! Gets me more in the mood for Spring and good books!
I like your categories!
My summer, autumn, and winter book baskets overflow. But spring? Not so much! That’s strange. Maybe I’m forgetting some. Back to look at the shelves again.
I’m so glad to hear that you loved The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. I just got it and have been so excited to read it, but I knew nothing of it and just ordered it from a book oder based solely on the name and the cover art.
I love, love, love The Penderwicks and The Penderwicks on Gardam Street. But they’re probably summer books. I know the first one takes place in summer, anyway. Can’t remember the season of the second one. Definitely on my all time favorite list- which is really long!
Great list and a fun way to organize it. Nice to see some familiar favorites and to have some new ones to check out. Also, second the recommendation for An Egg is Quiet and A Seed is Sleepy. And have you ever read Dahlia? Your boys may not be so crazy about the story of a girl and her doll…but I have a hunch you will enjoy it, especially the illustrations and specifically the girl’s bedroom full of her nature collections. Highly recommend it and all of Barabara McClintock’s books. http://www.amazon.com/Dahlia-Boston-Globe-Horn-Honors-Awards/dp/0374316783/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269437257&sr=1-1
And a long time favorite about planting and creating something magical: The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone.
Happy Spring!
Love this list of good reads. (Come on Rain is one of my very favorites!)
Oh, thanks so much for the great spring book list! Will be checking some of these out just as soon as my daughter’s done with her report on our local history. I just love reading with my kids!
This is so great, I love seeing what others are reading with their kids. And the way you paired the books with your favorite things about spring, makes reading the list so fun.
Oooh, bookmarking this page for future library reserves! Thanks for the great compilation!
thankyou for such a great list. Do you know how wonderful it is to have a list like this available? There are times when inspiration is needed and this list is that kind of inspiration. Thank you.
I love this list! Thank you! (And I adore your butterflies so much!)
I’ve been looking for a replacement copy for A Child’s Garden of Verses (I gave mine to my brother who is having his first baby) and took your suggestion re: the Gyo Fujikawa edition. I found a used copy on Amazon.ca and was unable to see pictures but I eagerly await its arrival:)
